WKN and the Sallachy Estate are keen for the communities to directly benefit from the Sallachy Wind Farm project. The starting point for discussions on how the community can be involved with the Community Benefit Fund (CBF), was the agreement from 2012, which committed to a fixed payment benefit scheme of £5,000 per MW per annum to go to the communities in Central Sutherland (Lairg, Creich and Ardgay). Given the negative impact of wild land on the prospects for economic development across Sutherland, we have agreed with our existing community partners to now include their neighbours in North West Sutherland (Scourie, Durness and Kinlochbervie) in our future Community Benefit Fund.
At our meeting on Thursday 15th November 2018, we tabled and discussed the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding, which was agreed in principle. This commitment is now binding on WKN. We are pleased that the communities of Central Sutherland have agreed to appoint Foundation Scotland to manage these funds on their behalf. This follows established practice for other local windfarms and demonstrates the good working relationships that exist within the local community. We are also pleased that the communities of North West Sutherland are now in discussions with Foundation Scotland to appoint them to manage the funds earmarked for their local area. A final decision on this will be taken in the first half of 2019 via our Community Liaison Forum.
